Alex Nyburg is a doctoral researcher in the Department of Biology at the University of Miami. His research is focused on the intersection of natural capital accounting, nature-based adaptation solutions, and climate change policy. His goal is to integrate natural capital into adaptation decision-making frameworks by employing ecosystem service valuation techniques. He is particularly interested in the ability of coastal ecosystems to protect vulnerable communities from sea level rise and stochastic weather events. He hopes his work will stimulate socially equitable adaptation investments in green infrastructure, and the restoration and conservation of natural ecosystems.
Nyburg graduated from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science at the University of Miami with a B.S. in Marine Biology and Marine Science. Prior to coming to UM for his Ph.D., he worked in a number of fields within environmental conservation, including wildland firefighting, invasive plant and animal management, rare plant management, and aquaculture. He also worked with Hawaiian civil rights organizations to promote and protect indigenous land rights and management practices on O’ahu, Hawai’i.
