Armen Agopian is a PhD student in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. His research focuses on climate change adaptation and ways to effectively leverage and integrate scientific knowledge in the policymaking process. His areas of interest include flood risk analysis, the impacts of drought on agricultural systems, and the relationship between climate change and the water-energy-food security nexus more broadly. He incorporates both quantitative and qualitative methods in his work, with a view to building a more robust and just approach to environmental risk analysis and management.
Agopian is originally from Los Angeles, California. Prior to his doctoral work at UM, he graduated with a BA in International Studies and Environmental Studies from Johns Hopkins University. His undergraduate research focused on the role of scientific knowledge in environmental politics and climate governance, engaging IR theory, STS, and environmental science and studies. He also received an MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine from the University of Cambridge. His work examined the history and philosophy of environmental and earth sciences, specifically analyzing the emergence of climate modelling during the Cold War.
